Public Consultation Monday 27th April – Monday 11th May 2026

As you may be aware, Aldi, the award-winning discount food retailer, is reconsulting the community on plans to deliver a new Aldi food store at a site in Ellesmere.

In February 2023, Aldi consulted the local community about its plans for Ellesmere, which saw 89% of over 900 responses express support. Since then, Aldi has been working with officers at Shropshire Council and other key stakeholders to progress the application. This process has seen minor amendments made to the plans originally presented to the public.

The proposal site is still located at land off Scotland Street (A495), opposite Ellesmere Business Park. This site and the wider area were previously identified within the now withdrawn Shropshire Council draft Local Plan for a large-scale mixed-use extension to Ellesmere. Aldi’s proposals would see the site developed with a modern discount food store in a highly strategic location, delivering a new discount food store that contributes to local economic growth and creating 40 new jobs, targeted at local people and paid at an industry-leading rate.

In all, the proposals would deliver:

  • An investment of £7million into the local economy
  • A new community food store with a retail area of 1,127sqm
  • The creation of up to 40 new, full-time equivalent jobs, paid at a sector-leading rate, above the National Living Wage
  • 128 car parking spaces including eight accessible and nine parent & child spaces
  • 10 electric vehicle charging points with additional infrastructure installed so further points can be added in the future
  • Additional employment opportunities created during construction and supported through the supply chain
  • Attractive landscaping incorporated around the site to improve its appearance

Aldi is committed to undertaking public consultation before the application is finalised. As a result, Aldi has today issued a newsletter to over 2,000 local businesses and residents, with details on how to view our virtual consultation and to provide any feedback they may have.  The consultation will run for two weeks from Monday 27 April to Monday 11 May. You can access our virtual exhibition by visiting our dedicated project website: www.aldiconsultation.co.uk/Ellesmere.
