MAYOR’S CHARITY FUND
The Mayor’s Charity Fund was set up to assist many of the smaller charitable and voluntary groups in Ellesmere that do not have a national profile and can find fundraising more challenging.
The Mayor of Ellesmere, Cllr Graham Hutchinson, has chosen two charities to support during his Mayoral term – The Swan Mere Day Centre and the Ellesmere Memory Cafe. Both local charities provide our fellow residents with essential support that helps to keep them active in our community.
Each year the Mayor will distribute the funds raised to his or her chosen charities.
SWAN MERE DAY CENTRE
Swan Mere Day Centre are a small and inviting not for profit community interest company Day Centre located at Ellesmere Town Hall. The group has a maximum of 9-10 services users each day and meet every weekday except Thursdays.
Swan Mere provides a safe, warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere for older people to enjoy the company of others and to provide the opportunity make new friends.
Refreshments are provided throughout the day and a two-course roast meal served at lunchtime.
A wide range of activities are offered, and members are invited to take up new activities or rediscover forgotten hobbies and interests.
If you are caring for a relative at home, or just want to access the community we cater for various levels of mobility and memory loss, therefore providing respite where needed. All activities are targeted at individual needs, so that they can enjoy their day at Swan Mere.

OUR SPACE MEMORY CAFE
The Memory Café meets on the second Monday of every month at Our Space on Trimpley Street in Ellesmere (2 – 4pm). It is a group for people affected by memory issues and their family members are welcome to come along as well. It is a thriving group, with around 20 people attending each month.
We meet up, chat, drink tea and coffee and eat cake. It’s a hard life! We also invite speakers, try different activities and have trips out. Over the last year, for example, we have had sing-a-long sessions, run quizzes, had craft-making and flower arranging classes, toured Ellesmere Boat Yard, had talks about Hearing Dogs and Falls Prevention and we visited the Oswestry Town Museum.
A lot of peer support takes place, both amongst people affected by memory issues and amongst carers. We are also lucky enough to have various health and social care professionals, such as Jacquie Pomeroy from the Alzheimer’s Society and Rebekah Edwards, the local Admiral Nurse who attend from time to time. This is very helpful, letting people know what supports and services are available. We are lucky to have a group of committed volunteers who run around making the tea and generally look after the practicalities of each session.
Conversations within the Memory Café can lead to other ventures. We now run a monthly Film Club on the first Saturday of each month, for over 60s. Recently, someone in the group suggested developing a Dementia Choir. We’ll see if this happens. Other suggestions have included people getting together to go for walks stopping at cafes and teashops; and people getting together to visit charity shops, antique centres and car boot sales. It’s all about getting people together.
