Two countryside sites owned and managed by Shropshire Council are in the running to be named the nation’s favourite park in the Green Flag Award People’s Choice awards 2021.
The Mere at Ellesmere and Severn Valley Country Park at Alveley are among 2,127 parks and green spaces in the UK that were awarded the prestigious, international Green Flag Award this year.

From now until Sunday 14 November 2021, people have the chance to vote for their favourite Green Flag site – at www.greenflagaward.org
Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet Member for communities, culture, leisure and tourism, and transport, is urging people to show their support:-
“We are well aware how beautiful Shropshire is and this is our opportunity to promote two of our most popular areas.
“Please support The Mere and Severn Valley Country Park by voting for them in the People’s Choice award category.”
The winner of the People’s Choice award 2021 will be announced at a virtual awards ceremony on Tuesday 23 November.
The Mere at Ellesmere is the largest of north Shropshire’s meres with gardens, woodland walks and historic parkland. The Mere-side promenade, Arboretum and The Boathouse restaurant provide a pleasant day out with views across the mere. Further around the mere is Cremorne Gardens, offering lawns and wildflower beds, formal flower beds and specimen trees as well as public toilets and a children’s play area. The park provides a number of themed walks which encourage the exploration of the park through sculptures and features, and provides interpretation of its heritage and makes links with Ellesmere town, the Llangollen Canal and surrounding countryside.
Severn Valley Country Park is in a wonderful rural setting along one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Severn. It offers paths, cycle paths and bridleways, guided walks, activities for children, a visitors centre and café. There’s a playground and picnic benches and an easy access trail designed especially for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
